Virtual Credit Card Numbers

Secured and unsecured, good and bad credit card offers

Good and Bad Credit Virtual Credit Card Numbers. Apply added security to your shopping by making it more difficult for fraudsters to place unauthorized charges on your credit card account.

Obtain a virtual credit card number through your issuer (as applicable).

Tip: Avoid temptation by asking your credit card issuer to lower your total line of credit

Virtual Credit Card Number:
* Some virtual card numbers expire after a single use, while others offer repeated use. It's harder to find a virtual credit card company since the popularity of these cards has severely dwindled. Some major issuers do provide these cards, although they do not openly market them. Hence you may have to contact an issuer to ask if they offer virtual credit cards.

* Virtual cards could make obtaining returns more complicated, since the number was good at the time of purchase but may no longer be valid later.
There are several possible solutions, Echard says. One is to for the consumer to request a number that will be good until after the holidays (say, by Jan. 15), to allow time to make returns, if needed, she says. The other is to take the return in the form of a store credit or gift card instead.

* Hold on to your receipts, as they contain valuable information about exactly what you bought and just where and how long the card number was valid.

Citibank offers virtual numbers to its customers. As stated on the Citi website: "Virtual Account Numbers: With this free service for Citi cardmembers, you never have to give out your real credit card number when shopping online. Instead, a substitute credit card number is generated to take the place of your real account number. Every purchase you make with Virtual Account Numbers will appear on your monthly statement, just like any other transaction. It's the safe way to shop online."

The steps for Citi customers to obtain a virtual number are:
1) Login: For your protection, you will only be able to access this service with your Cardmember User ID and Password.
2) Generate a virtual account number: In one click, you can generate a random credit card number and make it virtually impossible for anyone to steal your actual account number while shopping online.
3) Use it: Enter this number into the merchant's form and complete your purchase. It’s really that easy!
Plus, you're always protected by $0 Liability for unauthorized purchases—if you didn't buy it, you don't pay for it.

Cons of Using Virtual Credit Card Numbers:
* You may not be able to pick up theater tickets with a virtual credit card, nor confirm airline, hotel or rental car reservations with a credit card number that doesn't exist off the Web.

* You may not be able to pay recurring expenses, such as monthly phone or cable bills, with a credit card number that expires every few weeks would be a hassle. Pre-ordering unreleased books, compact discs, videos and DVDs off the Web is out as well. The reason? Your virtual card number could expire before the merchandise is available for purchase.

Credit Card

Not everything can be removed from credit reports, bankruptcy and collection accounts will be stuck on reports from seven to ten years. That is why it is important to start trying to improve credit as soon as possible. Looking at reports can provide some insight into your credit health. It is important to know where your credit is, to be able to know how to improve bad credit. The best way to start is to consider ordering all three credit reports so each can be compared.

First check out all the information to be sure it is your information, and does not belong to another person. It happens all the time, for example, if your name is John Smith there is probably another person with the same name, make sure all the information in the report belongs only to you. For anything negative on reports, check for accuracy, if it is wrong, follow the guidelines for disputing incorrect information. Do not let incorrect information keep your scores low. Don't worry about checking your own credit reports, it will not have a negative affect on your scores.

It can help to print out reports when you get them online and use a highlighter to identify questionable items. Make sure everything is accurate and if not, set a goal to correct the information. If creditors reported wrong information, dispute it. It can help scores when things like judgments, liens, late payments, bankruptcy, and collections expire from reports, but even with them on the report it is never to late to get good information reported.

Errors that are disputed must be done by sending a written letter to each of these three agencies: Equifax, Experian, and TransUnion. There is information posted on their websites about the process. Once they get your letters, they have thirty days to investigate and determine whether or not to make any changes requested. It is best not to dispute any information that is correct or good on the reports. One of the best way to improve scores is to get new, positive information reported. This could be done using a credit card and paying off the balance each month. When you start trying to improve scores, monitor your progress frequently. There are some great credit monitoring services that include things like unlimited access to credit reports and scores, and email alerts. Many people like to sign up for these services as it may give them the tools they need to help them manage their credit a bit easier.
