Discover® News and Discover's U.S. Spending MonitorSM

According to Discover's website, their Discover® U.S. Spending MonitorSM indicates about two-thirds of consumers anticipate that less will be spent holiday gifts. With retailers hoping for a better economy to boost holiday spending, consumers’ spending intentions to spend less can be disappointing to retailers. The Monitor asked about 5,000 consumers if they would spend more, less or the same as last year on holiday gifts and almost 63% said they planned to spend less this year.

Last year, 2008, was the worst holiday shopping season on record. One concern is that more women than men anticipate spending less on gifts this year. Many consumers may cut over-all spending to cover higher expenses for gas and groceries. About 52% plan to reduce purchases like going out to movies or restaurants and 51% of consumers plan to cut home improvement spending. As for vacations, over 50% plan to make cuts in the months ahead. For all the details about Discover's Monitor information, visit their website for all of these details and more news.

Discover® Card Mobile Features

Discover® Card has launched an App for the iPhone and iPod that will let cardmembers manage their accounts from their iPhone or iPod Touch. When the App is opened, registered users can login with their ID and password and they can contact customer service if they need to. When logged in, the user has the ability to see recent activity, make a payment, or view reward details. It can be easy to make a payment and check a balance which makes it helpful for managing finances when on the run. This is just another way Discover has helped account holders to manage finances through mobile devices. For more details visit the Discover website.

Discover® Card

Discover® Card did a holiday shopping survey and the results indicate many consumers are concerned about finances but not enough to ruin their holiday mood. Even though many will spend less than last year this 2009 Christmas. Consumers indicate that they are spending less due to the effects of the economy. Discover's survey further indicates that women plan to spend more than men during the holidays. Many will make a budget and set a goal to spend less money. Shoppers want to find good sales, incentives, and go for the least expensive brands. Free shipping will be another incentive for shopping purchases. Credit card rewards may be a big factor for purchases and be great motivation for cardholders. Visit the Discover website for all these details and more.

Discover Card

According to information on the Discover website, many small business owners thought the economy was worse in December, but think conditions for their own businesses will get better in the next six months with many looking for more encouraging signs in the overall economy. A small percent of owners indicate they will increase spending on business activities like advertising, inventories and capital expenditures during the next few months and only about half plan to reduce spending. When asked about retirement plans, only about sixty percent have a plan in place, yet they feel they will have enough saved to last through their retirement. More information indicated that most small business owners make their own investment decisions. More than half have an IRA account and many plan to continue working without stopping. When asked what they will eventually do with their businesses, about a third said they do not plan to retire and only about 20% will transfer ownership to a family member. This information comes from the opinions of small business owners and consumers who participate in the Small Business Watch survey from Discover. Visit the Discover website for this information and more details.

Chargeoff Debt Collectors - Did you know, you can still be expected to repay chargeoffs? That's why it's better to negotiate debt settlements with creditors instead of simply charging off debt.

A debt chargeoff is not cancelled by your creditor. Your creditor will add a negative entry (charge-off) to your credit report and continue to attempt to collect on the debt, and you are still responsible for repaying. But if you get the creditor to agree; in writing, to a debt settlement offer, then you can get off the hook.

Typically a credit card chargedoff occurs after 180 days of no; or less than, minimum payments. The chargeoff will remain on your credit report for seven years from the date it was chargedoff. If you pay the debt, it will be updated with a status of "Chargeoff Paid" or "Chargeoff Settled." The only way to remove a chargeoff from your credit report is to wait the seven year period or negotiate with the creditor to have it removed after you pay the account in full. Other than waiting for time to remove a chargeoff from your credit report, there is a way to get these removed.

Chargeoffs are often passed to a debt collector, unfortunately a debt collection agency is the last entity you want to negotiate with. The original creditor who reported the chargeoff is the one to deal with and the only one who can remove the credit report entry. Tell your creditor that instead of getting nothing, you will be willing to negotiate a much lower payoff amount in return for the removal of the negative credit report entry.

Before you contact the creditor, first line up your ducks. You'll need to figure out how much you're able to pay and when. The more you can pay and the quicker you can pay it, the more negotiating power you'll have.

Be sure to speak only to someone who has the authority to remove the chargeoff from your credit report. Let the creditor know you're interested in paying the account and would like to make payment arrangements in exchange for having the chargeoff status removed from your credit report. Speak politely and professionally. Avoid blaming the creditor or giving your life story. Keep it short and to the point. Best case, the creditor will agree to remove the chargeoff from your credit report.

Credit card companies are contractually bound to report credit information to the credit bureaus, so it can be difficult to get a creditor to agree to remove the chargeoff from your credit report. Even so, some cardholders have been successful in making a pay for delete agreement. If you can't get the creditor to agree to remove the chargeoff completely, try for something less negative like 'Closed'.

Once you are ready to make an official agreement, get the settlement terms in writing. We offer a sample debt settlement agreement letter you can modify with your personal information. Another option is to have the creditor fax you a copy of the agreement on their own company letterhead.

Never send in payment until you receive the agreement in writing. Be sure to followup later to ensure the creditor remove the chargeoff from your credit report.

If you don't think you can handle the free debt settlement negotiation yourself with complete confidence; or you simply don't want the harassment, you could let a professional debt settlement company negotiate on your behalf. You might even get a better settlement, too.

Whichever option you choose, just remember that some lenders will not give you new credit or loan approval until you've paidoff past debt.
