Tax Free Holiday
By Credit Federal | Published 08/10/2009
Some consumers enjoyed making purchases recently without having to pay taxes on those purchases. The so called "Sales Tax Free Holidays" kicked off this past weekend but not all states celebrated this holiday. Mississippi and Georgia took part and consumers did take advantage and make purchases.

For the next few weeks, some states may be offering no taxes on clothing, shoes, and school supplies not to mention other items.
Be sure you know all the details, as some required a minimum purchase to get the tax free benefit. Citizens who like to shop may view the holiday as a time to get a tax break on purchases they plan to make with or without the holiday.

For consumers who are struggling with debt problems, the best option may be to avoid the tax holiday, stay home, and not spend any money just to save a few dollars in taxes. It is sort of like the buy one and get one half off deal. If the item is not needed, why make a purchase to save taxes only to have two of the very things you don't really need. Simply save the money that would have been spent by putting it in a savings account or use it to pay down a debt.

There are some states that may not be participating in any tax free holidays like Florida, Maryland, District of Columbia, and Massachusetts as it costs the government money they can't afford to loose. Just like consumers' are experiencing budget problems due to the economy and lost jobs, state budgets are being drained too by consumers who are having to use social services. States could loose millions in revenue by participating in tax holidays.

Eliminating taxes for a certain period of time could be viewed by retailers as a "stimulas" to get more shoppers into stores. Consumers may view it as they are getting some "tax relief". At this time of year, many consumers are shopping for school necessities and retailers may have gotten those shoppers regardless of the tax holiday. Shoppers may not continue to shop after the holiday ends and the stimulas may be short lived in helping businesses draw in customers.

The recession has taken a toll on states everywhere and they have deficits in the billions, but during the next few weeks some states will offer some sales tax waivers. Be sure you know the details when you shop.
