What is a credit score?
It is a number that reflects the risk of being delinquent on a loan or credit obligation.

What information is used in calculating a credit score?
Information such as mortgage loans, student loans, credit cards, auto loans, public records (tax liens,bankruptcies), and inquiries you initiated for lenders to view your credit.

Who calculates credit scores?
The credit reporting agency calculates the score when a lender makes a request. Lenders use it and other information to evaluate your credit application and determine the credit risk.

Is there only one credit score?
Lenders use of credit scores vary but there are as many as one thousand credit scores.

Why don't I have a credit score?
If there is little or no credit history, there may not be enough information to generate a credit score.

When do credit scores change?
When new information is added the credit report changes and the credit score may change.

What is the credit score range?
Different credit scores systems have different ranges. Experian sends a score and explains what the number means relating to creditworthiness.

What are score factors?
Score factors explain how items in the credit report affected the score and had the most impact.

How will shopping around for the best interest rate have an affect?
Too many inquiries may have a negative affect on scores. If that is evident by multiple inquiries, during a specific time, they may count them as only one inquiry.

What is the score range for the VantageScore?
The Score's range is  from 501 to 901:
  • A: 901-990 (Super Prime)
  • B: 801-900 (Prime Plus)
  • C: 701-800 (Prime)
  • D: 601-700 (Non-Prime)
  • F: 501-600 (High Risk)

Who decides if I get my loan?
Credit reporting agencies do not decide if loans are approved. Banks, credit card companies, or other lenders decide. Other factors like income and the size of the loan is also a factor.

Could credit scores be used as leverage to get lower interest rates?
It is possible to negotiate for lower interest rates when seeking a loan or line of credit.

What is a good credit score?
Credit scoring systems are different and have different ranges. If an Experian report shows a good credit score, chances are the lender's scoring system will show a good score.

Do lenders and creditors look at all three credit reporting agency reports and scores before approving a credit or loan?
Not always, but mortgage lenders may look at reports from all three credit reporting agencies. Some lenders may use reports from two or only one of the credit reporting agencies.

Are preapproved offers considered as new credit do they affect a credit score?
No, only consumer initiated applications for credit affects the score. Non consumer Inquiries have no effect on credit scores.

Do finance companies have a negative impact on a credit score?
It can negatively affect scores because they often have high interest rates. If the loan is always paid on time even though it has high interest rates, it can have a positive affect on scores.

Does having too many credit cards affect a credit score?
Too many credit cards with either high balances or large amounts of available credit could have a negative impact.

If my spouse had bad credit before we were married, will that affect a credit score?
Yes, if you have a joint account, co-signed a loan, or have authorized use of another person's credit and these are on your credit report. Names on the account do impact the credit scores. In some states, all debt acquired during a marriage may be considered as joint debt regardless if the account is a joint account.

Does co-signing for a loan affect a credit score?
Yes, cosigning means you are responsibile for the debt if the other person does not pay as agreed. The account will be on both individuals credit history and affect scores.

Do late payments affect a credit score?
Paying late can have negative affects on a credit report for up to seven years.

Does renting or leasing a home affect a credit score in any way?
Paying a real estate loan on time has a positive affect.
