Unemployment Layoffs and GM
By Credit Federal | Published 04/29/2009
Unemployment and layoffs are throughout every state. Now there may be thousands more unemployed from GM (General Motors). The nation is watching to see how it all develops.

It is not known which factories will close or how closings will be decided. Closing factories and having layoffs could help deter bankruptcy for GM. The government's deadline is the end of May and GM needs a plan.

In the midst of layoffs and closings, GM must still determine which of its models will stay and which will go. Pontiac is feared to be dead so there may be concern that plants that make it may close.

Decisions usually must be made in relation to costs. GM plant locations and the locations of suppliers may be a factor in deciding the fates of factories. Companies often expand and become bigger and GM has also been modernized. The question may be, will modernization prevent a GM factory from being closed.

Some of GM's plants are located in places that have high unemployment rates. Laidoff workers may need to relocate just to survive. Relocating may not be so easy for some or may not even be a choice.

Many times workers move around just to keep doing what they know how to do. A GM worker may be willing to uproot and move with the job. This would be one way to try to survive and adapt to a plant closing and layoff. The good news is that there is always change. Once the economy makes an about face, more of the unemployed surely can find the job they desire.
