IRS Late Tax Filing Extensions
By Credit Federal | Published 04/17/2009
Still haven't filed your 1040 and won't make the government's deadline? IRS Late Tax Filing Extensions.

Millions of people do not make the April 15th deadline for filing taxes. There are forms that can be filed for a six month extension. The Form 4868 gives tax payers until October 15th to file.

Filing late does not mean you have extra time to pay what you owe. If you didn't file April 15th, get busy and file an extension now. By not filing an extension you risk owing penalities and interest, and the possibility of going to jail for not filing.

Pay the IRS. If you owe them money it is better to make a partial payment rather than none. Don't forget you may have to pay penalities and adding more to what you owe does not help you. The IRS is willing to work with people who are having hardships. Write a letter to the IRS explaining any hardships.

Those who usually owe taxes are tax payers who are not having enough money withheld from their paychecks. Often those who are self-employed under pay during the year and then owe taxes. If you are owe taxes it would be a good idea to have more withheld from your paycheck or pay more in if you are self employed.

With all the economic issues, there may be many who will need the IRS to give them a payment plan. Whatever your circumstances ignoring filing your taxes and ignoring what you owe can only lead to added interest and payment penalities. Interest on unpaid taxes could be high as it accrues until the last payment is made.
