How to get a W2...

One of the most important documents to have when individuals do their taxes is their W-2 Form.

If you worked, your employer has until February 2nd to get a W-2 to you. The W-2 can be in electronic form or paper form and if you didn’t get one here are a few tips:

Ask your employer where is your W-2 Form? Was it mailed to you? If the address was not correct, was it returned to the employer? If there seems to be a problem, ask the employer to resend it or issue another W-2.

Call the IRS (800-829-1040). You will be asked some basic information and an estimate of the wages earned, the federal income tax withheld, and how long you worked for the employer. Your estimate needs to be based on Year–to-Date information using a final pay stub or leave-and-earnings statement if you have one.

Use Form 4852, this can be used as a substitute to the W-2 Form - that is if asking your employer did not solve your problem. This form allows you to estimate your income and withholding taxes and it can be attached to your Tax Statement. However, there may be a delay in any refund until the information you provided is verified.

File your tax return by the day due even if a W-2 is not received and use Form 4852. It is important that you file your taxes by the deadline. If you happen to get the W-2 later and the information is different from what you reported, you must Amend your return by using Form 1040X, Amended U.S. Individual Income Tax Return. For further information about these Forms, call 800-829-3676 or visit the IRS.gov website.
