Discover, Visa, MasterCard and American Express... Even the big credit card issuers encounter struggles...

$2.75 billion credit card company lawsuit. Discover Financial Services' antitrust suit against Visa and MasterCard.

Credit card companies Visa and MasterCard will pay up to $2.75 billion to Discover Financial Services in an antitrust suit settlement. Visa will pay $1.89 billion. MasterCard will pay $862.5 million. Discover said it will receive about $862 million of the settlement in the current fiscal quarter and up to about $472 million per quarter in 2009.

Morgan Stanley, the former parent of Discover, will refund $100 million to Visa and MasterCard under separate agreements.

Four years ago, Discover filed a lawsuit against MasterCard and Visa alleging they had harmed its business by preventing their member banks from issuing credit cards for Discover's network.

"This settlement will enable Discover to further strengthen its capital base in this challenging economy and also will support continued investment in growing our business, including broadening global acceptance, expanding network volume and growing our deposit franchise," Chief Executive David Nelms said in a statement.

Visa settled a similar suit with American Express nearly a year ago for a maximum $2.25 billion. MasterCard also settled with AmEx in June for a maximum of $1.8 billion.

To the victors go the spoils? In the economic downturn and facing the high risk of default, it's likely settlement winners will either use the funds as a financial buffer or to further promote their brands.

Do you have credit card debt problems? Consider credit card debt settlement or credit counseling.
