Spouse Died with Credit Bills
By Credit Federal | Published 09/7/2008
What you should do if your spouse died and left behind unpaid credit balances and other bills in the spouse's name.

1) Check to make sure the bills are legitimate, that some scam artist who pilfered through the obituary is not trying to fraud you out of money. If you're not sure of the legitimacy, write to the creditor and ask for an explanation.

2) Pay the bills timely as was done before your spouse's death.

But what if you can no longer afford to pay bills timely that were in your spouse's name?

1) Prioritize the bills, paying the mortgage, utilities, health and property insurance bills first.

2) For bills you cannot pay, contact the creditors; in writing, and explain your circumstances and ask for a modified repayment plan.
