Used Car Tip

Did you know a damaged or wrecked auto can get a clean title by transferring registration to another state? Avoid being scammed with our free, used car buying tip.

Used Car Buying Tip To Avoid Title Brand Scam

According to AutoCheck vehicle history reports from Experian Automotive, more than 185,000 damaged or wrecked used cars had their designation, or brand, removed when they were re-titled in another state. Although the brands of damage were not placed onto the new titles, consumers can still discover the truth through AutoCheck vehicle history reports.

In the first half of this year, nearly 1.3 million cars and trucks throughout the United States were designated as damaged by accidents or severe weather including thunderstorms, hail, tornadoes and flooding.

Vehicles sustaining damage or experiencing other major events in their histories carry 'brands' (words or symbols on the official vehicle title issued by the state Department of Motor Vehicles). These brands tell about the car's status or condition, using terms such as Salvaged, Lemon, Rebuilt or Reconstructed, Water, Hail or Fire Damaged, Insurance Loss, Broken Odometer or Abandoned. Unscrupulous dealers and resellers will 'Title Wash', by getting a new title in another state. By doing this, the bad brand is not placed onto the new car title. Thus, used car buyers are not aware of the past branding.

Before buying a used car, consumers may want to obtain an Experian Automotive AutoCheck Report.
