Higher Debit Credit Card Charges
By Credit Federal | Published 08/1/2008
Rewards are high for Visa, as consumers who are tight on money charge more on credit cards. Card maxed? Apply for balance transfer credit card offers with 0 interest intro, or for benefit cards to offset rising costs like a gas credit card.

Debit Card and Credit Card Charges During Bad Economy

Visa's profit rose 41% in the most recent quarter, thanks to increased consumer use of its credit and debit cards.

The past quarter had a surge in defaults and delinquencies as consumers battled debt in face of a troubled economy. The fortune for Visa is that it does not actually extend a line of credit... Lines of credit on Visa credit cards are extended by the issuing bank, not by Visa. Hence, Visa does not suffer when cardholders default on payment, while Visa receives a share of merchant transactions (charges).

According to Visa's CEO Joe Saunders: "Despite a challenging economic environment in the United States and a softening in traditional credit card spending, the strength of Visa's debit business drove solid growth in the region."
