Discover Card Gas and Food
By Credit Federal | Published 06/9/2008
According to Discover(R), American spending has increased mainly due to rising prices, particularly for food and gas. Now more than ever may be the best time to seek credit card benefits and rewards, whether a Discover card, a gas card or a store discount charge card.

There was a time not long ago when consumers chose to splurge their extra money. Now; however, they're having to spend their spare dollars on rising gas and food costs just to stay alive. This is causing many of them to wish they had an emergency savings plan to draw from.

According to the Discover U.S. Spending Monitor, consumer spending rose 1.4 points in May to 86.8. The Monitor posted record high percentages of consumers who said they spent more in May than April (56 percent) and who expect to spend more next month (46 percent), both up by six points respectively. The spending is not for luxury or other non-essential purchases. The spending is to stay alive while being forced to pay higher prices for food and gas.

And the rising costs couldn't have come at a worse time, while the economy is struggling. Record high numbers of consumers are reporting their finances are getting worse (54%) and that shortfalls in income would force cutbacks in their current lifestyle (43%).

The most important factor in the spending outlook appears to be the record high fuel costs. Last year at this time, only 23% of the country said they spent more than $200 a month on gasoline. This May nearly 36% report having to spend at the $200 level or higher each month to fuel their vehicles.

The price of gasoline has caused 54% of the country to reduce living expenses to cope. In addition, 59% of consumers; including 43% of the country's higher income population, are changing vacation plans in response to rapidly rising energy costs.
