Major Banks and Credit Card Issuers
By Credit Federal | Published 10/2/2006

News article about major banks and credit card issuers.

Major Banks:

According to the American Bankers Association, banks play a key role in financial education.

The ABA testified to Congress that banks help consumers by providing financial literacy.

The president of OmniBank said that too many people fail to realize their dreams and lose their hard-earned money because they lack basic money management skills. Thousands of bankers nationwide are dedicating their time and resources to develop financial education programs that are specifically tailored to meet the needs of their local communities.

CreditFederal.com is also dedicated to assisting U.S. credit consumers, via its extensive article library of financial information. Additionally, Credit Federal also provides free tools, such as bill pay reminders, personal budget software, and a range of calculators.

Banks sponsor in-school programs where children operate make-believe banks, Web-based programs for navigating life's financial stages, as well as ABA's annual events, "National Teach Children to Save Day" and "Get Smart About Credit Day," Cripe told the committee.

Cripe testified that the federal government can help the banking industry's efforts by:

Encouraging bank regulators to grant Community Reinvestment Act credit for financial education programs.

Supporting minimum financial education requirements in school.

Sponsoring public service announcements that teach basic money management; and,

Providing financial support for existing programs with proven track records.

Major Credit Card Issuers:

Chase: JPMorgan Chase & Co completed its acquisition of three business groups owned by Bank of New York Co., allowing the big investment bank to create a network of 750 Chase branches in New York, New Jersey and Connecticut.

JPMorgan Chase acquired Bank of New York's consumer, small-business and middle-market banking businesses, adding 339 branches and more than 400 ATMs. JPMorgan also will gain deposits of $15 billion.

The former Bank of New York customers and existing Chase customers now have access, without paying a fee, to 2,200 area ATMs, which are branded Chase or Bank of New York. The Bank of New York branches will be converted to the Chase brand and computer system in the spring of 2007.

Visa: Visa USA agreed to extend its partnership with Bank of America for another six years through 2011, for the issuing Visa-branded payment cards.

Visa USA said the agreement will be retroactive to Jan 1, 2006 and run through December, 2011.
