Bank credit card rewards
By Credit Federal | Published 05/16/2006

To lure new customers and to get existing customers to use their cards more frequently, several banks are offering debit and credit card rewards.

Here are some highlights:

National City Bank is offering points for everyday tasks such as writing checks, paying bills online and using debit cards. Bonus points are offered for customers who open new accounts or get new loans. The offer is also available to small-business customers. Rewards offered are: $5 Starbucks gift card for 2,000 points; 4,000 points for a $10 certificate to Old Navy; a four-day Caribbean cruise for 420,000 points.

Citigroup Inc. offers customers 'Thank You Points', which is one reward redeemable point for every $2 paid with a debit card linked to a checking account and one point for every $3 on purchases that require use of a personal identification number. The bank allows customers to link their credit cards to the program and offers bonus points for loans, savings accounts and other products and services. The rewards are: 5,000 points for a $50 donation to be made to the American Red Cross Hurricane Katrina fund; 2,500 points to buy down the annual percentage rate on a Citibank credit card 1 percent for three months; 30,000 points to buy down the APR four points for a year.

Bank of America is offering 'Keep the Change', which allows customers to round up their debit card purchases to the nearest dollar and put the difference into an interest-earning savings account. The bank will match savings, limited to $250 a year, dollar-for-dollar for the first three months. After that, it will match 5 percent of annual savings. The reward for the customer is extra savings.
