When you start paying your teen, it is time to teach some basic money skills. Learning early how to manage just a simple thing like an allowance is a good way to start.

Teens have to learn how to save money. It requires dedication that even adults find difficult. Once your teen gets paid for a task, set a day to go to a local bank to open a savings account for your teen. You will need to be a signer on the account.

Encourage your teen to place money in the account every time money is earned. Once this is a habit, start talking about saving a certain percent and keeping a certain percent. Later, establish a budget for fun activities, college, items wanted, items needed, and giving to a charity.

By beginning early while your teen is at home, good budgeting skills can be learned before they are in a real life situation. Consider matching what your teen saves for further motivation.

Share the family budget, let them see how finances are managed. A real life example can be a good lesson. Let them see how much is allowed for savings, retirement, medical, utilities, food, gas, entertainment, clothes, and bills.

Eventually, your teen could experience having a checking account or can review how you use your checking account. If you do online banking, be sure to share that skill with your teen. Let them view the bills paid and let them be a part of the process of paying bills online.

Teens need to learn about bank statements and how accounts must be monitored. Explain what happens when checks bounce and monthly fees associated with the account. Don't forget to let them know about using an ATM to get cash and a check card that replaces writing checks. Discuss all fees and charges with them.

Use credit card statements to show your teen interest rates, late fee informtion, terms and conditions of having a credit card. Discuss how statements can help track expenses for tax purposes. Statements can also be used to find any impulse spending sprees. They quickly show where money is being spent, so they can be used to set budget goals.
