A free checking account is defined as one that does not charge an annual fee. It may require you to first make a deposit in order to activate the account. And, some banks also offer free checks.
Here are some things to look for when choosing a free checking account:
- No low balance fees
- Free ATM and/or Debit Card
- No fee for ACH and Direct Deposit transactions
- Free online account access and management
- Unlimited monthly checkwriting
- No minimum checkwriting amount
Free Checking Account Cons: As with anything free versus paid, you typically have to give up certain perks. Here are some perks you'll likely lose:
- No interest earnings on your deposits and balances
- No returned (cleared) checks, nor photocopies of returned checks
- No free 'stop payment'
- No free 'cancelled check return'
